A community of research

University is not an institution where one can just obtain academic titles. University is a community of students and teachers who together learn to love thinking itself, to understand the questions which rose from ages past and to deal with new questions as and when they emerge. For teachers, indeed there is a need for constant presence, the desire to face new themes every year, a style of teaching in which the lessons are supplemented by seminars, conferences and meetings that allow free speech to evolve through the medium of diverse free-thought expressions. For students it necessitates the will to take part actively in academic life and to be co-responsible for its good performance with a critical and creative presence. For everyone, it also implies encouraging an atmosphere of friendship, which is not only a nice feeling, but a shared ideal. This is the spirit which distinguishes the study of philosophy at Tor Vergata.

An internazional breadth

Philosophy is like few others an international discipline: the languages important for philosophy are many and the opportunities to learn them are not lacking with the courses offered by the University (Chinese, French, English, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, German, as well as obviously Italian for foreigners). The students at Rome Tor Vergata also have the opportunity to follow in different European countries Erasmus programmes: France, Spain, Germany. Starting from the academic year 2018-2019 there is also a great opportunity for the students of the master's degree: choose at the time of enrollment the international curriculum Form of rationality, in collaboration with the University of Halle-Wittenberg. In this curriculum, which has a special funding for students, half of the course takes place in Italy (first and fourth semester), half in Germany (second and third). In this way one has the opportunity to learn one of the most requested and important languages of the European Community and at the same time to enter the philosophical tradition that has given philosophy some of the most important voices of the modern and contemporary age, from Immanuel Kant to Peter Sloterdijk.

To fill in up the curriculum for the Masters program in Philosophy, students can choose from about fifteen different subjects with an advanced level. Some fields receive more representation. The studies in Antiquity concern the origins of Western civilization in the Greek and Roman world and the first centuries of Christianity, where philosophy has played a crucial role as a catalyst and creator of culture, offering the ideal of freedom of knowledge which is still quite crucial even to this very day. The history of ancient philosophy and late antiquity is also well supported by other disciplines that touch on the history of civilization, science and literature. The field of history of philosophy studies the evolution of philosophy through the ages, showing its internal dynamics and correlations with other cultural phenomena. In this way it proposes the idea of philosophy as critical knowledge, including within itself also the synergies with the teachings of moral theories and connecting with the interests of the ancient field. The field of ethics examines both the foundations of ethics and the world of applied ethics. In this way the course characterizes itself for its attempt to bring the major themes of contemporary debate (in bioethics, law, religion, aesthetics) to their roots in the very question of man himself. A particular attention is devoted to subjects and themes that allow you to build bridges with the world of economics, education and the arts. The choice is wide and one can develop different paths to study, but the goal is the overall quality: each course is an opportunity to be involved in a research proposed and carried out by the professor. In this way the degree is also for those who wish to continue their studies, an initiation to the PhD program, run by a High School of Studies in Philosophy with a board of professors with an international pedigree.
