Bibliografia di Edmond Jabès

1. Premessa

Questa ricerca bibliografica nasce da un più ampio tentativo di ridefinire l’analisi testuale dell’opera di Edmond Jabès (Cairo 1912 — Parigi 1991) attraverso alcuni strumenti metodologici che, nell’ultima decade, hanno contraddistinto il campo delle letterature comparate: gli studi postcoloniali, il dibattito sul multiculturalismo, sul pluralismo e sul postmoderno. Tali domini teorici sono fortemente orientati allo studio di espressioni letterarie non tradizionali, nate dalla penna di scrittori immigrati o migranti, di quanti appartengono a minoranze o comunità che non corrispondono esattamente ad entità statali o nazionali. Si tratta di narrative segnate da spostamenti e diaspore, patrie lontane e immaginate, ricche di contaminazioni, permeate dalla difficile consapevolezza di identità composite che cercano di conciliare lingue diverse, le tradizioni del passato e i veloci cambiamenti del presente.

Considerata da questa prospettiva, l’opera di Edmond Jabès si presenta come il luogo simbolico in cui convergono elementi diversi e molteplici che ne hanno fatto, nel panorama della letteratura francofona, un esempio unico sia a livello tematico che formale. In uno dei suoi ultimi libri fu lo stesso scrittore, sovente assimilato in tutto e per tutto alla cultura francese del secondo Novecento, a rivendicare una specificità identitaria — e dunque anche letteraria — complessa, germogliata all’interno della propria parabola biografica:

C’est un fait paradoxal, mais je me sentais plus proche — je pourrais dire plus dépendent — de la culture française au Caire qu’à Paris même. Il faut préciser que mon déracinement a été total et qu’il s’est pratiquement fait du jour au lendemain […] je avais l’impression d’avoir profondément changé en quelques semaines […]. Je découvrais ma différence alors que la distance m’avait permis de la gommer en grande partie […]. A Paris, l’Égypte, son désert, le rythme de vie qu’il m’avaient imposé se dressait d’un coup entre ces auteurs, ces écrits et moi. Une autre obsession du livre se faisait jour sans que j’y sois encore tout à fait préparé: un livre hors du temps — comme m’apparaissait soudain l’Égypte — et qui intégrerait la rupture à tous les niveaux […].1

È stato spesso sottolineato che l’opera di Jabès, dalla forte impronta filosofica e sempre in bilico tra la prosa e la poesia, rifugge da qualsiasi esatta classificazione di genere.

La cifra narrativa di difficile definizione — metafora di un’esperienza esistenziale che non appartiene ad un’unica matrice culturale — prende forma nel deserto, in quello che per Jabès è uno spazio reale, un non-luogo contingente, prima ancora di divenire dimensione simbolica.2

Partendo da questo presupposto nel 1998, il saggio di Daniel Lançon, Jabès l’égyptien, ha contestualizzato, grazie ad una puntuale ricostruzione, l’ambito di provenienza di Jabès, e dunque anche la sua prosa, da un punto di vista specificatamente storico-culturale. Nato in una delle grandi capitali dell’Impero Ottomano, il Cairo, da una famiglia sefardita della borghesia ebraica che aveva acquisito la nazionalità italiana, Edmond Jabès frequentò le scuole francesi e nel 1957, dopo la crisi di Suez, si stabilì a Parigi con tutta la famiglia. Questi elementi accomunano la sua esperienza esistenziale a quella di tanti esuli appartenenti alle comunità ebraiche dell’Oriente islamico e, in particolare, dell’Egitto coloniale. Definiti talora «levantini»,3 vissero quella che oggi viene definita biografia «postcoloniale».

La possibilità di guardare all’opera di Jabès da un’ottica diversa include comunque l’analisi di fonti critiche necessarie e imprescindibili per la comprensione del corpus jabèsiano. La bibliografia qui proposta tenta di fornire dunque una completa ricognizione dei maggiori e più importanti contributi scientifici prodotti sull’opera dello scrittore fin dai primi anni Settanta, quando Le livre des questions si impose all’attenzione della critica e del pubblico, sino ai giorni nostri.

La parte iniziale della presente ricerca bibliografica comprende le opere scritte da Jabès in francese, di cui viene dato l’anno della prima e talora anche della seconda pubblicazione. In seguito sono state annoverate le traduzioni in diverse lingue straniere occidentali (inglese, italiano, spagnolo, tedesco) e orientali (ebraico). A questo proposito bisogna notare che solo di recente, e sempre ad opera di case minori, sono stati tradotti e pubblicati (a volte ripubblicati) diversi libri di Jabès. Resta tuttavia ancora non fruibile in italiano la prima produzione dello scrittore (Je bâtis ma demeure) e quella finale (Du désert au livre. Entretiens avec Marcel Cohen), ambedue fondamentali per la valutazione globale della sua cifra poetica.

Nella sezione successiva si è proceduto fornendo la ricognizione bibliografica accennata sopra. I saggi segnalati ripercorrono le maggiori tematiche presenti nell’attività letteraria di Jabès: l’Olocausto, il deserto, il silenzio, l’assenza, lo stretto legame con l’opera di Lévinas.

L’elenco dei testi critici include, a parte alcuni contributi ritenuti oramai «classici» (Derrida, Lévinas, Bounoure, ecc.), numerosi apporti scientifici di recente apparizione, prodotti anche in ambito extraeuropeo. A questo proposito sono stati inseriti due testi in ebraico scritti da uno dei maggiori esperti israeliani di Jabès, David Mendelson, un saggio collettivo che raccoglie gli interventi di un convegno svoltosi a Tel Aviv (Jabès: Le livre lu en Israël) e i lavori di Helena Shillony, studiosa dell’Università di Gerusalemme che pubblica in francese (Edmond Jabès: une rhétorique de la subversion, La langue est ma patrie. Edmond Jabès et le français, L’œuvre de Edmond Jabès: répétitions, ressemblances).

Non mancano tuttavia riferimenti anche agli apporti scientifici, nati nel contesto accademico italiano, di Alberto Folin (Hospes. Il volto dello straniero da Leopardi a Jabès; Da Leopardi all’eresia saggi sulla poesia e sul potere) e di Antonio Prete (Del confine e delle sue trasparenze. Margini per Blanchot, Jabès e Char).

Tra le traduzioni in italiano è segnalata inoltre un’edizione in cui è presente uno scritto critico di Rovatti (Uno straniero con, sotto il braccio, un libro di piccolo formato). Le non numerose pubblicazioni su Jabès apparse in Italia testimoniano che la ricezione delle opere dello scrittore è ancora parziale e che, soprattutto, la produzione scientifica è circoscritta quasi esclusivamente, anche se con le dovute eccezioni, a contesti filosofici. Segno, questo, che gli specialisti di letteratura si tengono ancora lontani dall’intraprendere uno studio testuale dell’opera di Jabès.

La ricerca bibliografica si conclude con una sezione in cui vengono segnalati di alcuni saggi di taglio storico-culturale utili alla definizione del contesto di appartenenza dello scrittore. Alcuni, citandolo, rimandano direttamente all’opera e alla vita di Jabès (Ammiel Alcalay, Pierre Gazio, Jacques Hassoun, Max Jacob), altri si configurano come strumenti necessari per la comprensione dell’universo francofono di provenienza (Heyworth-Dunne, Micha Sofer, J. J. Luthi,) e per un’esatta percezione di quelle che furono le condizioni e le circostanze storiche in cui la comunità ebraica d’Egitto si venne a trovare in epoca contemporanea (Gudrun Kramer, Joel Beinin, Mounah Khouri). Si tratta di saggi, importanti quanto quelli di natura filosofica e letteraria, per una comprensione complessiva e non più settaria dell’opera di Jabès, delle tematiche manifeste e di quelle più velate che talora rimandano, per ammissione dello scrittore stesso, ad elementi strettamente storico-biografici.

Questo apporto non vuole e non può proporre una bibliografia esauriente e comprensiva di tutto il materiale critico esistente sull’opera di Jabès. La quantità di pubblicazioni è, da un certo punto di vista, smisurata perché spesso costituita da brevi contributi apparsi su riviste di piccola diffusione e, dunque, di difficile reperimento. La ricognizione bibliografica qui offerta intende porsi semplicemente come un ausilio capace di riassumere, sia a livello nazionale che internazionale, i diversi orientamenti critici seguiti dagli studiosi.
